empowering single mothers through financial & healing justice

the need

poverty rates for black female-led household families are at 31.7%. in recent months, the COVID-19 pandemic has only exasperated the financial and strain, and disparities on single-parent families, with women of color suffering the most devastating consequences. existing research also suggests that single mothers are more likely to experience chronic depression, anxiety, substance abuse, stressful life events, low self-esteem, social isolation, and lack of emotional support. for black women and women of color, these traumas are compounded by the effects of structural racism, police, and inter-community violence.

amandla, which means power in the nguni languages (spoken in parts of southern africa), was a popular rallying cry used during the resistance to apartheid. we believe that single mothers hold the power to define their outcomes and hope to support them in doing so through financial and healing justice.
